Do I need a safety inspection for my trailer?
  • A single axle trailer under 750kg does not require a safety or roadworthy certificate. Fill in a self-assessment form available from Queensland Transport.
  • Brand new, never been registered, trailers do not need a safety certificate for their first registration.
What trailer types are covered by this inspection?

Trailers that have a Gross Trailer Mass (GTM) between 750kg-3,500kg.

  • Car Trailer
  • Boat Trailer
  • Horse Float
  • Camper Trailer
A trailer safety certificate inspection covers these areas:
  • Modifications
  • Identification
  • Lights & electrical components
  • Tow couplings
  • Suspension
  • Body and chassis
  • Brakes
  • Wheels & tyres
What happens if I have a defect and fail the inspection?
  • Queensland Transport allows fourteen days for repairs to be undertaken.
  • After the repairs have been completed you need to book your re-inspection.
  • If repairs are completed to the Code of Practice, you will be issued with a safety certificate for your trailer or horse float.
Where should I display the safety certificate?
  • Handwritten safety certificates, or blue cover label, must be displayed in a prominent area such as the vehicle window or dashboard.
  • The information must be visible from the outside of your vehicle.
How long are safety certificates valid?
  • The roadworthy/safety certificate is valid for two months or 2,000 kilometres (whichever occurs first).
